WHAT IS A CAPYBARA?

Capybaras are the largest rodents in the world, weighing up to 150 pounds. Native to South America, these semi-aquatic mammals spend much of their time lounging by the water, munching on grasses and occasionally sliding into a swim.

They’re known for:

  • Webbed feet that help them swim with ease
  • Strong social bonds, living in herds in the wild of up to 100 capybaras!
  • Surprising vocal range, from gentle purrs and whistles to clicks and barks

At Wild Florida Adventure Park, our capybaras have access to water and lots of social space just like they would in their natural habitat!

Why Are Capybaras So Friendly?

Capybaras aren’t just adorable. They’re biologically built for friendliness!

Unlike many mammals, they are non-territorial. That means they don’t guard land or get aggressive over space. Instead, they live in tight-knit herds where being close to others is a natural part of life. This makes them comfortable with touch and physical closeness, even from animals that aren’t their own species.

They’ve earned a reputation as the peacekeepers of the animal kingdom. Capybaras have been spotted relaxing with ducks, turtles, cats, monkeys and even crocodiles!

Part of their friendly vibe comes from how they handle stress. As prey animals, capybaras avoid conflict. They rely on stillness or walking away, rather than fighting back.

This calm, go-with-the-flow personality is one reason they are considered among the safest animals to observe or interact with, especially in supervised encounters like the one we have at Wild Florida.

Do Capybaras Like Humans?

When treated respectfully, yes! Many capybaras are comfortable around people.

At places like Wild Florida, where they are cared for by experienced animal experts and meet calm, curious visitors, capybaras often feel at ease in human company.

If a capybara is relaxed, it might approach and sniff you. Some allow gentle petting, especially on the back or shoulders. Others may settle nearby and begin making soft vocalizations like their signature purr.

Still, every capybara is different. Just like people, they have individual preferences. The key is to let the capybara decide how close the connection gets. Giving them space and patience is not only safer, it is also how trust is built with these incredible animals.

FAQs

Do capybaras make good pets?

Capybaras are gentle and social, but they are not ideal pets for most people. They need plenty of space, constant companionship from other capybaras and regular access to water.

In many states, owning one requires a special permit. But just remember, capybaras are happiest in herds, not houses!491467595_18501841459011137_6008512358517913014_n.jpg

Why are capybaras so popular on the internet?

Capybaras have a calm, chill personality that makes them incredibly photogenic and meme-worthy. Videos of them relaxing with other animals or chirping happily while being petted have made them internet stars.

They are a symbol of being unbothered, and that energy is hard not to love!

Why don't crocodiles eat capybaras?

In the wild, capybaras and crocodilians often share the same habitats. While predators like caimans and crocodiles can eat capybaras, they don’t always choose to. Capybaras are usually too much trouble to chase.

They stay alert, move in groups and are excellent swimmers. Capybaras’ calm, slow behavior may also make them less likely to trigger a crocodile’s instinct to strike.
