Would you like to meet the largest rodent on the planet? You might after reading about them! A capybara measures about four feet long and two feet high and can weigh as much as 140 pounds, making its mark in the animal kingdom. Not to mention, it is an internet sensation with millions of views and its very own “Capybara Song.”
But let’s find out what makes this giant rodent so special and how you can meet a whole herd of capybaras at Wild Florida’s Gator Park!
What is a Capybara?
Capybaras, scientifically known as Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, are close relatives of guinea pigs, and their resemblance is easy to spot! As rodents, one of their main features is that their teeth are ever-growing. They keep their teeth at a healthy size by chewing on tough vegetation.
Much like beavers, capybaras are excellent swimmers. Their partially webbed feet and fast-drying fur make this mammal perfectly suited for a semi-aquatic lifestyle. Need to dodge a predator like a jaguar or anaconda? No problem! These skilled swimmers dive into the water and glide away effortlessly as one of their go-to survival techniques. These unique adaptations allow capybaras to thrive both on land and in the water.
Where do Capybaras Live?
Capybaras are native to South America, living in a range of environments that stretch from Venezuela to Argentina, as well as the lush Amazon basin. These semi-aquatic mammals thrive near rivers, lakes, swamps, and wetlands, as they rely on water for both safety and survival.
Capybaras are crepuscular animals. This means they are most active at dawn and dusk when predators are not around. During the hotter hours of the day, they take it easy, lounging along bodies of water to avoid predators and stay cool.
Although capybaras are usually shy, they’re social butterflies when it comes to group life. Herds usually range from 10 to 20 members, but they can sometimes grow to as many as 40 capybaras. And with females having litters of four to five pups each year, it’s no wonder their groups can grow pretty quickly!
What do Capybaras Eat?
Capybaras are the ultimate plant-powered herbivores! They love feasting on aquatic plants, grasses, and other vegetation in their habitat. Their strong teeth quickly work through dense foliage, which helps them manage their continuously growing teeth.
Fun fact: Capybaras eat their own poop as well. Yup, you read that right. Animals like capybaras can have a difficult time digesting grasses. Eating their own waste helps them extract even more nutrients from their plant-based diet.
Are Capybaras Good Pets?
Capybaras are undeniably adorable and friendly, but they’re not cut out to be pets. As semi-aquatic animals, capybaras need access to large bodies of water to swim. Most homes don’t have the necessary space or environment that capybaras require.
Also, capybaras have stricter diets that rely on certain plants, which may be difficult to find. And while they’re known for their chill vibes, they’re still wild animals with instincts that don’t always work well with domestic life.
Plus, in many places, it’s actually illegal to own a capybara. So, while they’re fun to admire, these gentle giants are happiest in their natural habitats, where they can swim, snack, and relax to their heart’s content!
