Recently, Florida Wildlife Officials warn that bears will be in their annual feeding frenzy of the the course of the winter of 2013. This means that there will be numerous bear sightings and human encounters with bears will likely rise. The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports that while bears don't typically hibernate in Florida, they still experience the need to eat as much as possible during autumn.
They say that the solutions is bear-resistant garbage cans. In 2011, wildlife officials handed out 130 bear-resistant garbage cans to the residents of Greenwood in a pilot program. Within six months, there was a 59% decrease in bear interactions with Greenwood residents. Officials warn residents that they shouldn’t leave dog or cat food outside to avoid potential encounters.
