With the increased development and diminishing space for Florida’s natural inhabitants, encounters between wild animals and humans are becoming more common. Though it may seem like a thrilling experience to see a wild animal, it also isn't a good sign. Not only are they fighting to share territory with you, but the encounter can also become dangerous.
It’s important not only for your safety, but also for the safety and care of these animals, that we take caution, and learn to accept and live with them without putting them in danger, or putting yourself into a scary situation. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when it comes to enjoying the wildlife no matter where you are.
-
Never attempt to feed wildlife. Although it may seem harmless, it could be dangerous for the animals’ health, and they could eventually learn that when there are people, there is food. Animals may aggressively approach humans in search for food if they are accustomed to it.
-
If they feel threatened, they may defend themselves, especially if you decide to try to pet the animal.
-
Even if you believe an animal has been orphaned, or its parents killed or injured, inform a park ranger or call the Florida Wildlife Commission. Never take the animal home with you.
-
Observe wildlife at a respectful distance so you do not disturb, scare or threaten them.
-
If you live in an area prone to animals like raccoons, do not leave food or trash outside. It can be attract unwanted animals, and could end up being more dangerous than you believe.
It can be easier making accommodations to avoid wildlife conflicts rather than putting yourself into a situation that could be potentially dangerous.
