The Water Resources and Reform and Development Act was signed by President Barack Obama on Tuesday, June 10, 2014. This bipartisan water resources bill will help with Florida port improvement and Everglades restoration and provide up to $1.4 billion in monetary assistance. At Wild Florida, our Everglades air boat rides go right through the headwaters of the Everglades, so we passionately care about the conservation of this beautiful portion of Florida.
The Act is the first attempt since 2007 to approve future spending of federal money for eight Florida projects conceived by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Additional projects include deepening the Jacksonville harbor and improving the water quality in the Everglades. “This bipartisan bill will provide the needed funding to ensure the safety of our ports and the competitiveness of our shipping industry,” said U.S. Rep. Dennis Ross in a statement on Tuesday.
In addition to the Everglades water quality portion of the bill, the bill also covers port projects including the deepening of the Jacksonville & Cape Canaveral harbors, as well as widening and deepening the Lake Worth Inlet. While this act doesn’t guarantee federal funding, it does greatly improve the chances for it.
