Delayed Everglades Restoration Gets a Second Look

The postponed plan to restore the Central Everglades region will be reviewed by state officials and legislation on May 23. This $2 billion project has been slated in the past to get more water from Lake Okeechobee flowing south to help the Everglades National Park. Other benefits of this project are increasing South Florida drinking water supplies and lessening damaging flood-control discharges out to sea.

Both state officials and environmentalists have been waiting on the approval of the Army Corps of Engineers that would lead to receiving congressional approval for this plan. The developmental stall of this project occurred in April after the Army Corps’ Civil Works Review Board postponed a decision to move forward with the project after state and federal planning occurred for three years.

“I know people were disappointed,” said Jo-Ellen Darcy, assistant secretary of the Army for civil works, who attended a meeting of state and federal officials in Royal Palm Beach on Wednesday. “We had a minor delay, but that’s all it has been.”
