Florida Airboat Rides
Though we use our airboats here at Wild Florida for Florida airboat rides, fun, education, and excitement, airboats also serve a greater purpose as well: search and rescue. Due to their flat bottom and engine-mounted top, airboats move easier and quicker in environments such as flooded neighborhoods, swampy or boggy areas, and even on snow and ice.
A recent example of airboats used during an emergency is the recent devastation of Superstorm Sandy. Normally used for ice rescues in the Great Lakes area, the Coast Guard brought in their airboats to assist in shallow water rescues. Standard boats with propellers and engines below the boat would interfere with unknown objects and geography characteristics hard to identify above water. Airboats also helped deliver medical equipment needed to rescue injured civilians where the water level is too high for ambulances and difficult to walk on foot with equipment. So, there's definitely more to using airboats than fun Florida airboat rides at Wild Florida.
