The Wild Florida team is proud to announce one of the newest members of our Wildlife Park: the cotton-top tamarin. We’re excited to be expanding our Wildlife Park with new exotic and indigenous animals such as sloths, alpacas, lemurs and more.
The cotton-top tamarin is a small monkey that weighs less than 1.1 lbs. Being one of the smallest primates, the cotton-top taramin has an easily recognizable feature with their long white sagittal crest extending from its forehead to its shoulders. Their species is found in tropical forest edges and secondary forests in northwestern Colombia.
Social behaviors often displayed by the cotton-top tamarin include a clear dominance hierarchy in groups, and they have been studied for their high levels of cooperative care, as well as altruistic and spiteful behaviors. The species itself is known to be at risk due to a high-level habitat destruction. They are currently classified as critically endangered, and they are one of the rarest primates in the world.
