History

The history of Watusi cattle stretches back thousands of years. Their name comes from the Tutsi people of Africa, who were once referred to as the "Watusi" by outsiders. These cattle, officially known as Ankole-Watusi, descend from ancient Egyptian longhorn cattle that migrated south across the continent.

In traditional African societies, Watusi cattle were revered not just for their beauty but for what they represented: wealth, prestige and social standing. Large herds were a sign of prosperity, and Watusi cattle played a central role in cultural ceremonies.

Watusi cattle were brought to the U.S. in the 1960s, where breeders began preserving their unique traits. Today, they’re celebrated not just for their massive horns, but for their cultural roots and value in livestock conservation.

Watusi Characteristics

Watusi cattle are hard to miss and even harder to forget. Their most iconic feature? Those gigantic, curved horns that can stretch up to 8 feet wide! But they’re not just eye-catching. These horns help cool the cattle down by circulating blood and releasing heat, like natural built-in radiators.

In fact, Watusi horns are so impressive that a few individuals have even earned a spot in the Guinness World Records for the largest horns! But there’s more to these majestic creatures than just large horns.

Here’s what sets Watusi cattle apart:

  • Lean Build: Long-legged and surprisingly athletic for their size.
  • Striking Coats: Colors range from solid red to speckled and spotted.
  • Gentle Giants: Calm, social, and easygoing in nature.

With their hardy genetics, Watusi cattle are also built to last. A healthy Watusi cow can live between 18 to 25 years when provided with proper care. Their ability to survive on limited resources in Africa has translated into strong, resilient animals today.

Conservation Status

Watusi cattle are currently considered a recovering breed, slowly bouncing back after years of decline. Civil unrest, government-led crossbreeding programs and economic struggles once caused their numbers to decline.

But thanks to ongoing conservation efforts, this ancient breed is on the rebound. Today, there are only around 1,500 Watusi cattle living outside of Africa. And we are proud to care for a few of them right here in our Drive-thru Safari Park.

Watusi Cattle Behavior

Despite their powerful and impressive looks, this African animal is known for having a calm and social temperament. They rely on group interactions for security and communication, often staying close together and moving as a unit. This strong herd instinct helps reduce stress and supports their overall well-being.

Fun fact: Watusi communicate using a mix of body language, gentle vocalizations, and even horn movements!
