Florida Airboat Rides
Preservation efforts are continuing to help the Everglades recover from drought, and with the help of this fall’s rain, wet conditions in the Everglades are slowly returning to a norm. Although the rain has kept water managers on their toes with higher water levels and stressed filtering systems, the rain has provided a gratifying flow of freshwater through the Everglades and has helped reduce the drought by providing the wet conditions we normally want to see. This is just another step towards the increasing efforts to preserve the Everglades, and our Florida airboat rides and our wildlife family will surely benefit from these restoration efforts.
The recent increase of water to the Everglades from Hurricane Isaac and heavy rainfall has been stressful to both the wildlife and water managers, but the lack of freshwater flowing through the Everglades had been greatly reduced due to construction and drainage projects throughout the years. The rainfall is welcoming to help create a flow of freshwater that reaches further south and reduces drought conditions, and to provide freshwater to Florida residents and wildlife throughout the state.
Covering around 11,000 square miles, the Everglades were thought to be less beneficial than settlers gave it credit for. The potential for farm land and communities gave these settlers a reason to drain the Everglades and begin construction that would ultimately be detrimental to the health of the ecosystem and the species it bolstered. Since then, the Everglades has significantly decreased in size by about half; with restoration efforts in place, the hope is that we can restore the flow of water to help the biological diversity and benefits to the species relying on the unique ecosystem.
At Wild Florida, our Florida airboat rides provide insight to this natural resource and the importance of conservation efforts that help both humans and its rich biological diversity.
