Venomous Snakes of Florida

Florida Airboat Rides

In the Florida Everglades, there are about 26 different types of snakes found, but only 4 of them are actually venomous. Learning how to identify these snakes can be detrimental, especially living in Florida. Although many species of snakes in Florida are generally harmless and scared of humans, if provoked, some snakes can be dangerous, especially poisonous ones. You more than likely won’t see any of these on our Florida airboat rides, but if you ever come across these snakes, you can easily identify them.

Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake: These snakes are considered to have the most venomous bite in North America and is the largest rattlesnake in the world. They are fairly easy to identify, especially if you hear their rattle. Their thick body has a diamond pattern along its back that is generally brown, yellow and olive colored.

Florida Cottonmouth: Sometimes referred to as a water moccasin, they are usually mistaken for a more common water snake species that are non-venomous. They typically have a “mask” across their eyes that is similar to a bandit mask and range from brown and black to olive colored with dark zigzag type bands along its body. Cottonmouths can be also identified from common water snakes by their cat-like eyes and wide head.

Coral Snake: These snakes can be easily identifiable by their bright red bands, black and yellow. There are two other snakes in Florida similar looking to these, but if the red and yellow bands are touching, then it’s the venomous Coral snake. They are fairly small in size, generally around 3 feet long.

Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake: Easily identifiable by its gray body and black splotches, the pygmy rattler only average about 2 and ½ feet but can pack a punch. Their rattler doesn’t make too much sound so it’s advisable to avoid any type of snake that has those patterns.
