Diary of an Airboater: Gator Enthusiast

Florida Airboat Tours

Chances are, one of the first things that pop into your head when you think of the Everglades or Florida airboat tours, is whether or not you will encounter any alligators. Riding in an airboat is only half the allure of experiencing Florida’s most unique eco tour. Wild Florida is your premier choice for , giving you the most unique and exciting eco trip in the state.

Although catching a glimpse of an alligator is not guaranteed, our airboat captains make every effort to show you the alligators that make our swamp their home. What is it about these creatures that make seeing them so exciting? Considering the fact that alligators have been around for more than 160 million years, you and your family can actually see a living dinosaur!

During the 1950’s and 1960’s, gators were hunted nearly to extinction, and were officially placed under protection of the Endangered Species act. The species, luckily, has recovered and are now thriving in our swamp, thanks to their unique breeding behaviors. Spring is of the most ideal times to take one of our Florida airboat tours, when alligators will be sounding off to their mates during alligator mating season. Did you know that female alligators deposit an average of 30 to 50 eggs? Unfortunately, not all of them will hatch, due to incidents such as drowning or predation. If you’re lucky, you might even get to see baby gators swimming around the swamp on one of our Florida airboat tours!

Alligators are opportunistic feeders, which mean they will typically go for food that is easily available and plentiful, such as fish, frogs, snakes, small mammals, birds, and turtles. Males will on average grow between 10 to 15 feet long and can weigh over 1000 pounds! Females grow to an average of about 8 feet and weigh between 600 and 1000 pounds depending on their length. In the wild alligators tend to live to around 40 years, with life spans in captivity reaching up to 80 years!

Since alligators are freshwater animals, it’s no surprise that Wild Florida is home to these remarkable animals. Every tour is unique, and our naturalists will make certain to give you the most impressive airboat rides in Florida.
