To help rekindle some of that excitement for their room decor, here are some tips for turning your child's room into an evolving Everglades adventure.
- Start with the walls! While a beautiful wall mural would look amazing and thrill your child, it will probably be outgrown fairly quickly. Instead, opt for a neutral tone and add posters, maps, and other Everglades-inspired art to the walls. For added decor, add a colored stripe or small painted accent around the top or bottoms of the walls.
- Make sure the bed matches the theme. Let your child sleep and dream, all while on an airboat ride in their room (not literally, of course). By using a neutral brown or grey bedspread, you can give the effect that the bed is the hull of the airboat. Also, fabricate a headboard that gives the illusion of a propeller; try to keep the propeller a bit abstract so you can use it later on when your child changes their mind about their room decor again. It’s going to happen, so you may as well plan for it.
- Now for the dresser and work desk. Every explorer needs a work desk and plenty of room to fit their wardrobe. Pick a pale wood to match the ambiance of the trees in the Everglades, or stain the furniture. If you’re really dedicated, you can age it to make it look old or give it a tree-like texture.
- DECOR! Put a globe on your child’s work desk. This desk isn’t just for show, it’s a learning station where they can complete their geography homework. Avoid putting too many teddy bears in the room and instead put gator heads on the dresser to fit the theme. For additional decor, add some fake plants to simulate the great outdoors.
You can go as minimalistic or complex as you like--the decision is yours! The key is finding the right decorative features to complement the space.
