A History of the Everglades

Florida Airboat Rides

Humans inhabited the River of Grass roughly 15,000 years ago by Paleo-Indians following large game such as bears, saber-toothed cats, and giant sloths. Florida started changing from an arid landscape to the wetter environment you see today on one of our Florida airboat rides 6,500 years ago. Due to the climate change, large animals Paleo-Indians hunted became extinct, causing the civilization to adapt and transform to archaic people.

Water level continued to rise around 3000 BCE, causing an increase in population and three distinct tribes developed: Caloosahatchee, Okeechobee, and Glades. From the Glades people, two major tribes emerged—the Calusa and the Tequesta—and from their demise emerged the Seminoles. Canoes provided the main method of transportation for the tribes thru the Everglades, similar to our Florida airboats, and could even travel as far as Cuba.

Invasion of Florida began in 1817 and led to the Seminole Wars in the mid 1800s and the statehood in 1821. Drainage and flood control in early 1900s promoted the growth of urban areas. On December 6, 1947, the Everglades were declared a national park and still serves today as an educational and an Orlando tourist destination.

Just as incredible as the Grand Canyon, the Great Lakes, and the Redwood Forests, the Everglades symbolize a national treasure. With Wild Florida, you can discover the scenic beauty and history. Call us at 407-901-2563 or visit us online to book one of our Florida airboat rides today!
