Florida Airboat Tours
In efforts of restoration and preservation, Majory Stoneman Douglas remains as one of the most influential figures in the conservation of the Everglades. Journalist and environmentalist, Majory took a stand on attempts to drain the Everglades we at Wild Florida Airbout Tours tour today and reclaimed the land from development.
Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1890, Majory didn’t move to Miami until 1915 after her failed marriage and persuasion from her uncle in efforts to reconnect her with her father. She started carving her name in South Florida history the same year when she joined a newspaper that’s now known as the Miami Herald. In the 1940s, a publisher approached her from the Rivers of America series to write a piece on the Miami River. Instead, Majory researched the topic for five years and later discovered the beauty and necessity of the Everglades we provide Florida airboat tours at today.
The Everglades: River of Grass changed the reputation of the Everglades from a worthless swamp to a treasured river essential for life in Florida—wildlife and residents alike. The book has also been claimed one of the reasons why so many tourists flock to the state and places like Wild Florida. Majory also joined the Everglades Tropical National Park Committee and founded Friends of the Everglades.
